The size of the cloud or fog has a mode between 10 and 20 μm in diameter. In a convective cloud, collisions and merging repeatedly occur due to updrafts and disturbances inside the cloud, and the cloud gradually grows to the size of raindrops. When raindrops have a diameter of 2 to 3 mm, they tend to collide and break, and raindrops with a diameter of 5 mm or more cannot maintain their state and split. The large accumulation of moisture at such temperatures depends solely on whether the air was initially warm and moist. Therefore, thunderstorms are rarely observed when there is no warm, moist air in the lower atmosphere. Furthermore, if the vertical airflow is large enough, a large amount of condensed moisture will be carried to a high place, and thunderstorms will develop only in a very thick cloud layer at a high rate of temperature reduction. Thunderstorms occur under the following synoptic conditions: (1) When the air mass is unstable in convection, is sufficiently warm and damp, it occurs in an updraft in the frontal zone. This type of thunderstorm is commonly referred to as a frontal thunder, because it moves along the front. (2) Among air masses that seem to be fairly uniform, some air masses exist individually or are generated by forming irregular groups, and these are called air mass lightning. The occurrence of this thundercloud occurs in the mountains, which tends to develop from afternoon to early evening. Thus, thunderstorms are generated from the developed cumulonimbus even though the cause of the thunder is different. Below the developed cumulonimbus, it becomes dark as in the evening, with heavy rain and lightning, and sometimes hail. Hail is common in May and June, and decreases in high summer due to high temperatures. During a thunderstorm, gusts are generated near the ground surface due to heavy rain and lightning, as well as strong downdrafts, and rarely tornadoes cause damage. The range and duration of a thunderstorm are characterized by the size of the cumulonimbus, which is typically about 20 km for a single cumulonimbus, about 1 hour in duration, and 30-50 km for a supercell (giant cumulonimbus). For several hours. If cumulonimbus clouds occur in groups, the range will be wider and the re-duration will be longer. Clouds in which water droplets are actively generated by condensation due to strong updrafts have a large amount of cloud water and strong precipitation intensity. However, on the Sea of ??Japan side, there is a period of thunderstorms called winter thunderstorms from autumn to winter. Thunderstorms often involve hot and humid summer air masses and those that occur on the Sea of ??Japan, which has a warm sea surface under a cold monsoon, both of which are caused by air mass convective instability. Figure 4.1 shows a cross-sectional view of the thundercloud. This is an example observed using a Doppler radar. The stippled area is the area with the highest rainfall intensity, and a heavy thunderstorm on the ground. The state of the airflow inside is shown by a thick solid line. The path of a thunderstorm is almost always defined as a thunderstorm course, as is the wind path. In the Kanto region, there are main courses called Haruna course, Akagi course, Nikko course, etc., and sub courses attached to them.
